The figure was first mistaken for a saint. Closer inspection revealed the skin, the teeth, and the tool hidden just beyond the frame. Leatherface of Assisi is believed to represent one of the earliest rural cults formed after the First Crossing, where devotion and butchery became impossible to separate.
